About us

Uncompromising quality and service, both standard offerings of BRM Brands, are the fruits of this family business. BRM Brands is a diversified, consumer-focussed processor of value-added food products. At the helm of this successful operation are founding partners Seymour Talpert and Johnny Candelaria, and their respective sons, Jacques Talpert and David Candelaria.

History

In 1974 Seymour Talpert, an hotelier and restaurateur by profession was running his own restaurant, The Gallery Grill in Johannesburg. Talpert, was unhappy with the monopolistic attitude and product he was getting from his then supplier and had the foresight and determination to do things better. So, he started limited production of ribs according to his own method and recipe in his restaurant’s kitchen initially for the purpose of serving ribs there. Talpert felt he had improved on what his opposition was offering the trade at time, which was soon confirmed by The Gallery Grill’s supplying pre-cooked ribs to other restaurants.

However, one restaurant supplying another was not a comfortable situation; so in 1985, Talpert partnered with Johnny Candelaria, who was a fresh produce distributor at the time. Together they started a small business from production premises of just 60 square meters, cooking, packing and distributing ribs to other restaurants. The catalyst that sparked growth for this seemingly sideline business was the opening of the first South African restaurant to focus their offering on ribs in the 1980’s with a single restaurant within this group, ordering about half a ton of ribs each week.

In 1991, the partners moved into their first formal factory of 400 square meters in Strijdom Park. Although the factory was small, they set out to do things correctly. Quality products became the hallmark of BRM and we became the preferred supplier of top quality ribs to South Africa leading restaurants. Over time, the company started experimenting with supplying retailers with a retail packaged product that allowed that excellent restaurant quality and taste to enjoyed by consumers in their own homes.

As consumers got to know BRM’s products, the company grew and so did our range. From previously being known as Barbeque Rib Manufacturers, the company is now called BRM Brands due to the fact that the range has and is continuing to be innovatively increased. While fully-cooked and marinated Pork Ribs remain BRM's key product, Beef and Lamb Ribs are also produced, as well as a range of top quality Poultry and various other products. While BRM’s range has been modified, mastered and commercialised, our products are still based on the original great tasting recipes that made us famous.

BRM Brands Today

Currently, BRM Brands operates from a purpose built, fully insulated 3000 square meter (32 000 square feet) food processing plant in Honeydew, Johannesburg. The plant is a world-class processing facility that boasts specialised machinery and state-of-the-art technologies. This allows for highly efficient production within stringent food safety and hygiene measures, conforming to the highest international food safety systems.

The plant is a dedicated processing plant that runs 24 hours a day, five and a half days a week. Central distribution and head office functions are performed at the manufacturing plant and there is a small factory outlet at the plant where all our products are sold directly to the public. By means of our own vehicles, as well as third party distributors and contractors, BRM products are distributed to supermarkets and restaurants throughout South Africa. In order to effectively service the Cape region, we also have a small distribution depot based in Montague Gardens, Cape Town.

BRM also runs a sauce manufacturing line that produces all the sauces used in-house, and also compounds the various ingredients used in flavouring the products.

The Way Forward, our Vision and Values

Over the years, we have enjoyed steady growth based on the procurement and production of superior quality products, according to top standards: we were the first South African company to have our food safety and quality assurance system accredited by SABS as ISO22000 in 2006. Furthermore, we are export approved and undergo regular inspections by third parties as matter of procedure for supplying all major South African supermarkets.
